Unknow Union soldier near Pike Lake
Unknown union soldier buried near Pike Lake State Park February 2012

During the Civil War only one advance was ever made by the Confederate Army into Ohio • General John H. Morgan crossed the Ohio River into Indiana then rode with... his cavalry into Ohio north of Cincinnati • "Morgan's Raiders" traversed the southern portion of the state passing near present-day Pike Lake State Park • Eventually he and many of his men were captured in southwestern Columbiana County near Salineville • Less than five months later General John Morgan and six of his men escaped from the Ohio Penitentiary and returned to the Confederacy Also during this historic period the family who farmed this valley found a wounded soldier collapsed in their field • The unconscious union soldier never revived • His name, unit, or hometown were never known • Today a solitary headstone below the dam at the base of a large oak tree marks the grave of this casualty from a tragic war.

Sioux Post Office

Sioux Post Office existed in the 1890's on the Jasper to Idaho road. The man in the center without coat and with suspenders was Earl D. Parker "Mick" who in his young manhood, later, lost an arm at the shoulder in a saw mill accident. Mr. Parker was for several years Prosecuting Attorney for Pike County. He was considere one of the best trap shooters in the State of Ohio, even handicapped as he was, loading and wothewise caring for his own guns and equipment. He was considere one of Pike County's foremost attorneys and his relputation in that field of endeavor was state wide.

If I have the right Parker he was born in 1893 and according to the 1940 census lived at 308 E. North Street, Waverly with his wife Floisse.

Reeds store Latham
Reed Store and Post Office in Latham, Ohio
The photo titled "Reed Store and Post Office", would be the store of Hollis S. Reed, merchant in the 1860 census, living in Latham, Mifflin Twp., Pike Co., Ohio. This is my husband's great-grandfather. His son by a second marriage, S. A. Reed, became a merchant and ran a general store in Briggsdale, CO 1910-1935. By 1870 H. S. Reed is a farmer, and dies in Mifflin Twp, Pike County in 1871. His second wife was Jane Moore, who married secondly, Albert H. Moore. I believe her to be the child of Andrew and Melisa Moore but have been unable to find her burial site or any information about her parentage. Information provided by Thelma and Duane Woodard
