Nipgen Church or School picture

Nipgen Church or School picture.  Does anyone have the answer?

Nipgen Church Family

Nipgen Church Family

Hereis a clue to the date of the picture.  Ellie Nelson in the picture was born January 16, 1897, Hallie Nelson in picture was born Sept. 1, 1898 and Margaret Nelson in picture was born Sept 2, 1900.  So we can come up with a pretty good guess as to the year. Margaret looks maybe early teens?.  The Nelson girls were 1/2 sisters to my Grandma Leona Nelson Addy.  Their father was David Nelson. He was the father of Leona but never married her mother Viola Corns.  When Viola found out she was pregnant with Leona, David had married Jeanie Baker. (But family history says Viola would not have been allowed to marry David) (Don't understand why other than rumor has it he was pretty wild)  Jeanie Baker Nelson would let my grandma play and associate with her 1/2 sisters and never held anything against her.  picture and information furnished by Barbara Toppins

How did How did Nipgen get its name?

4 Nippgen families left Germany. In Dec 1833 and in Aug 1834 Johannes Nippgen family left with 5 grown-up children and settled in Ohio. The village was given the name of Nipgen after one of his sons John Nipgen. 1928 Karl Nippgen und seine Familie Eisenberg emigrated 1928 to Sheboyan, Michigan. Only one descent from this Nippgens carries the surname Nipgen

Here is some family information from around the area supplied by Elaine Nichols-Tipton

Specifically, Acord & these allied families:   Atwood, Freshour, Davis, Walls, Baker and O'Brien/O'Bryant, as follows:

1910 - Twin Twp., Ross Co., Ohio
Spargursville Pike, dwelling #83

Richard Acord, 1889-1951   (my 1st cousin, 3 times removed)
Malissa Acord   (maiden name Walls)

(neighbors - Walls, Hixon, Rhoads, Gragg, Walls, Wilburn, Rea)

Richard Acord was the son of Wesley Acord, who was a son of John Acord & Margaret Atwood Acord, my 3rd gr-grandparents.   Wesley was a brother of my 2nd gr-grandfather, James Madison Acord.

Wesley Acord married Mary Jane Baker, daughter of Henry & Catherine Knight Baker, on 11 Jan. 1861 in Pike Co., OH.   Shortly after their marriage they located in the area of Baum Hill but before the census of 1880 they had relocated to Harris Station, about 1/2 way between Nipgen & Summit Hill.

Richard & Malissa are buried in the Fels Cemetery at the corner of SR 772 and Spargursville Rd.   His parents, Wesley & Mary Jane Acord are buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, on Potts Hill Rd.   They had several children who died young, and they are buried at the Johnson Cemetery on Minney Hill Rd.

Some of the Atwood family are also buried at Johnson's Cemetery, where John & Margaret Atwood Acord might possibly be, (I've been there; no stones for them, but lots of unmarked graves), and both Acords & Atwoods are buried there.   I have never found their death records or burial locations.

I don't think Richard and Malissa Acord had any children together, although she may have had one child before her marriage to Richard.   When I saw the photos of school children, I was hoping there may be an Acord in there.

Richard Acord had 2 sisters who also lived in the area.   They were Elizabeth Acord m. James C. Freshour, and they had Ocie (m. Shoults), Georgia, Gracie & Mary Freshour and Emily Alice Acord m. Frank Davis, but I've never found any children listed for them.   Emily died at age 45 in 1920.   Ocie & Georgia may have been young enough to be in the photos, but I would not be able to identify them.

Margaret Elizabeth Acord m. Lewis O'Brien/O'Bryant and they lived in the area of Spargursville.   They and their children are buried in the old Storms Cemetery.

I would love to exchange/share info on any of these families. E-mail:
